A 45-year-old man was today beaten to death allegedly by members of a right-wing militant group.
The victim was identified as Ghulam Mohammad, a resident of Sohi village under the Pahasu Police Station here.
Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Arvind Kumar Mishra said a 19-year-old man named Yusuf of Sohi had allegedly kidnapped an 18-year-old Hindu girl, a resident of village Fazalpur, also in the Pahasu area, on April 27.
He said the activists saw Ghulam, who was distantly related to Yusuf, in a mango orchard, dragged him to a secluded spot and beat him to death.
The ADM said the men wanted to know about the whereabouts of Yusuf.
Ghulam Mohammad’s family, according to NDTV, has accused the Hindu Yuva Vahini, the right-wing group set up years ago by Yogi Adityanath, who took over as Chief Minister at the head of a new BJP government on March 19.
The FIR or First Information Report of the police also refers to “five to six unknown suspects from Hindu Yuva Vahini” as suspects.
Senior police officer Muni Raj told NDTV, “Four or five men came in the morning and forcibly took him away from the garden. They took him to the jungle and hit him and left. In the complaint we have written that the members are of the Hindu Yuva vahini. Right now we are verifying.”
Three people are reported to have been arrested.
