Delhi Women’s Commission chief Swati Maliwal has written to the deputy commissioner (excise) asking for immediate closure of a liquor shop in the capital following complaints from a group of women.
In her letter, Maliwal said that she had received a complaint from a group of women representing Sarthak Shiksha Samiti about ‘law and order problems being created’ due to the presence of the liquor shop in Ajmeri Gate Chowk in Kamla Market. She said that it violated the Delhi Excise Rules, 2010.
She wrote, “You are requested to the necessary action for closure of the said liquor vend and provide the report on action taken to the Commission exercising the powers vested in you by the section 22(2) of Delhi Excise Rules, 2010, which states ‘ The Deputy Commissioner may, at any time, in public interest may transfer of any licensed liquor or bhang shop from one locality to the other.”
Maliwal had earlier asked for a report from the SDM, who concluded that the liquor shop was indeed causing law and order problem in the said neighbourhood.
The SDM report stated that the alcohol shop was situated just ’19 meters away from a temple and 58 meters away from a mosuqe’ upholding the women group’s complaint.
