The Congress on Friday appointed former India captain Mohammaed Azharuddin as the working president of its Telangana unit of the party. The announcement came just days before the state goes to polls.
The statement from the party said, “Honourable Congress President Shri Rahul Gandhi has approved the appointment of following persons as office bearers of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee.”
Azharuddin, the charismatic former captain of the Indian cricket team, had also fought Lok Sabha polls as Congress candidate from Moradabad in 2009. He led Indian cricket team in in 47 Test matches and 174 One Day Internationals. As captain, he led the national team to victory in 90 ODIs, the highest until surpassed Mahendra Singh Dhoni beat his record on 2 September 2014. He also held a record for 14 test match wins as captain. This was beaten by Sourav Ganguly, who has 21 test match wins to his name.
He was later banned for life after his name surfaced in the infamous match-fixing scandal in 2000.
Reacting to the development, Azhar tweeted, “Extremely humbled to be appointed as the Working President – TPCC would like to thank Sonia Gandhi mam @RahulGandhi ji for haiving faith in me. Will work tirelessy towards the uplifment & prosperity of Telangana and its people.”
