Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his anguish on the ongoing crisis in Jawaharlal Nehru University.

In a two-page letter, Kejriwal said that while anti-national activities inside Indian territory could never be tolerated, it was said that innocents were being targeted on sedition charges.

He wrote, “It’s being said that some people in the JNU chanted anti-India slogans. Chanting anti-India slogans inside Indian territory can never be tolerated. The whole of India is unanimous on this. But to harass innocent people, torture them and then abuse the government machinery by converting the nationalism into fear is not right.”

He added, “To project the entire JNU campus as a den for terrorist in the guise of this episode is very dangerous. Both the students and the JNU have earned global fame. It’s therefore, wholly wrong to project such globally-reputed institute as a den for terrorist.”

Kejriwal also reminded Modi about how journalists and students were assaulted inside the court premises in Delhi on Tuesday. One BJP lawmaker, OP Sharma, was seen on camera thrashing a leader of the Communist Party of India. Sharma later defended his action and refused to express any remorse.

Delhi police, which reports to Modi government, too appeared to make light of what was truly an extraordinary incident inside Delhi’s Patiala House court.

Kejriwal said that what happened in Patiala House court will ratlle everyone.

He said, “Some people thrashed teachers, students and journalists inside the court while police kept watching. Now, if people are not safe inside the court, then which place will be considered safe? You may also have seen today’s newspaper reports about OP Sharma thrashing a youth and also his statement that he (Sharma) would kill him if he had a gun with him. This is bound to fail the system. This is also not right.”

He demanded urgent and stern action against Sharma to send a powerful message to others in society. Kejriwal also demanded immediate release of those arrested on false charges adding that the PM must ensure that the political intervention came to stop in educational institutions.
