India on Monday continued to add medals in their tally by winning gold medals in Table Tennis and Badminton team events.

Indian men’s Table Tennis team matched women’s memorable gold by beating Nigeria 3-0 in the final of the 2018 Commonwealth Games’ table tennis team events. Later, the badminton mixed team clinched historical and maiden gold in the Commonwealth Games.

Since the induction of Table Tennis in the Commonwealth Games, this is the first time that India has won gold in both – men and women categories.

In a hard-fought contest, Saina Nehwal defeated Malaysia’s Soniia Cheah in the final event in three sets 21-11, 19-21, 21-9. Earlier, Kidambi Srikanth dominated and thrashed world no 1 Lee Chong Wei. This was India’s 10th gold in the 21st edition of the multi-sporting event which took India’s medal tally to 19.

The mixed-doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwik Rankireddy defeated Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh of Malaysia by 21-14, 15-21, 21-15. Malaysia was ruthless at the interval of the third set with the score then standing 11-7. In the end, it was Ponnappa’s experience that aided Rankireddy. The Indian duo then slowly took the lead and maintained it until the decider.

In Table Tennis team events, after Manika Batra fired India to a historic triumph over Singapore yesterday, the Sharath Kamal led men’s outfit too won 3-2 in the semifinals, played earlier today.

From India’s disappointing show in Glasgow four years ago, when it just managed just a silver in men’s doubles, India’s performance is a marked improvement.
