Creator of Chandigarh Rock Garden Nek Chand dies

Nek Chand Saini, the creator of Chandigarh’s breathtaking Rock Garden, died at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) at 12:11 am on Friday due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 90.

According to reports, Nek Chand had been suffering from multiple ailments, including diabetes and hypertension, and was also diagnosed with cancer.

Hailing from Shakargarh region (now in Pakistan), Nek had also worked as a road inspector for the public works department. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1984.

The Chandigarh Administration had on December 15 last year honoured Nek Chad on the occasion of his 90th birthday and 40 years of the opening of his creation, Rock Garden, which has brought not only Chandigarh, but India renown.
