Uttar Pradesh Police is once again under the scrutiny after a video of one of its cops touching the feet of riot accused BJP MLA, Sangeet Som, went viral.
In the video, a cop from Sardhana in Meerut is seen blatantly disgracing his uniform and the police force by bowing before Som, who is one of the accused in Muzaffarnagar riots that killed at least 60 people in 2013.
The incident took place on 29 September. The video has gone viral on social media platforms since then.
According to reports, Dharmendra Rathore, SO Sardhana police station, was being felicitated at a Dussehra event in Meerut by Som, who appeared utterly disdainful while handing the plaque to Rathore. But, an awestruck Rathore did not forget to pay his obeisance to the riot accused BJP MLA even while in uniform.
The episode will no doubt further dent the police’s credibility in a state, where the cops’ integrity has been under scanner since March this year, when Yogi Adityanath took over the reins of power from Akhilesh Yadav.
The event also comes just days after a member of Delhi Police had vacated his official chair for the controversial and self-styled god woman, Radhe Ma, as he stood with folded hands nearby.
Both in UP and Delhi, cops report to governments headed by Hindu nationalist party BJP.
