Just a day after its considerably improved performance in an otherwise BJP bastion, Gujarat, Congress on Tuesday literally swept the civic body polls in Rajasthan.
The party won all four Zila Parishad seats, 16 out of the 27 Panchayat Samiti seats and 7 out of 13 municipal wards.
The BJP, which has been governing the state, could win just 10 Panchayat Samiti wards, 6 municipal wards. the elections were held in areas spread over 26 districts of the state.
Reacting to the impressive performance of his party, Pradesh Congress President Sachin Pilot said that the BJP’s days were “numbered” in Rajasthan adding that its countdown had begun.
“The Congress gave a tough fight to BJP in Gujarat. The Rajasthan government has completely neglected the people in both rural and urban areas during the last four years,” Pilot was quoted by The Hindu.
However, state BJP spokesperson, Anand Sharma claimed that the result was good for the party as it has grabbed several seats earlier held by the Congress, reported NDTV.
Pilot said that his party will replicate the performance of civic body polls in the key Lok Sabha by-polls in Alwar and Ajmer and assembly by-elections in Mandalgarh. Elections here imminent due to sudden death of two BJP MPs and a BJP MLA.
In September this year, in the bypolls for the Pachayati Raj Institutions (PRI) in Rajasthan, the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress had won 12 seats each of the total 26 seats.
The crucial assembly polls are due next year in Rajasthan.
