Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday recused himself from being a part of the selection committee to decide the fate of CBI Director Alok Verma. Instead, CJI Gogoi nominated Justice AK Sikri to represent him in the committee that includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Karge.
CJI Gogoi recused himself because he had headed a bench that gave its verdict in Verma’s case on Tuesday.
The Supreme Court bench headed by CJI Gogoi had brushed aside the government’s order to remove Verma from his post in a midnight coup on 23 October. While reinstating Verma in his post, the top court had said that it was up to the Selection Committee to decide his fate in the wake of corruption charges against him.
Verma, meanwhile, resumed office on Wednesday. Although, he’s been asked not to take major policy decisions, some reports say that he may go for initiating an inquiry into the Rafale deal. Congress President Rahul Gandhi had said that Verma’s office was raided and sealed by the Modi government in a midnight coup because he had sought for files related to the Rafale deal.
Verma retires from his post at the end this month.
