Citizenship Amendment Bill passed in Lok Sabha as 311 MPs vote to end India’s status as secular nation

The Lok Sabha has approved the Citizenship Amendment Bill with 311 MPs voting in favour while only 80 opposing the contentious legislation aimed at ending India’s status as a secular country. Reacting to the passage of the Bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he thanked Lok Sabha MPs adding that the Bill was in line with India’s centuries old ethos of assimilation and belief in ‘humanitarian values.’

Modi added, “I would like to specially applaud Home Minister Amit Shah Ji for lucidly explaining all aspects of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. He also gave elaborate answers to the various points raised by respective MPs during the discussion in the Lok Sabha.”

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said, “Today is a black day for our constitution because what happened was unconstitutional. It very clearly targets the Muslim community, it is very shameful.”

Meanwhile, protests have erupted across north-eastern states against the passage of the Bill. All Assam Students’ Union (AASU)staged protests in Dibrugarh yesterday. The AASU and North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) have also called for a 12-hour bandh in Guwahati.

The Bill provides automatic citizenship to non-Muslim infiltrators living in the country. These religious groups are Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis. The Union Cabinet had cleared Bill last week.
