A Christian is 1 1/2 times more likely to commit suicides than a Hindu, says home ministry’s RTI reply

According to union home ministry, a Christian is one-and-a-half times more likely to commit suicide than a Hindu. Among other castes, Dalits have more tendency to end their lives.

This has emerged in a reply to an RTI request filed by The Indian Express.

According to the report, the home ministry under Rajnath Singh had carried out an extensive survey of caste-based suicides in the country after the National Crime Records Bureau revealed the castes and religions of those committing suicides in the country in 2014.

The data was expected to be released in 2015 the ministry has made it public till date.

According to the RTI reply, the home ministry said that the suicide rate among Christians is 17.4%, while the same among Hindus is 11.3%. Muslims with 7% and Sikhs with 4.1% are lowest in the table.

The percentage has been calculated using the suicides per one lakh population.

The suicides rate among Hindus and Christians are considerably higher compared to their population share. For example, the suicide rate among Hindus with 79.8 % population share is at 83%, while the same for Christians with 2.3 population share is found to be at 3.7%.
