“Chief Election Commissioner is still acting as the Chief Secretary to Modi ji”

The Congress on Thursday launched a stunning attack on the Election Commission by accusing the Chief Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Joti of working as the Chief Secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The party’s chief spokesperson, Randeep Surjewal, said, “The Chief Election Commissioner (AK Joti), who was Chief Secretary to Modi (when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat), is still acting as the Chief Secretary to Modiji. This is shameful for the Election Commission.”

Surjewala’s comments came after the EC ordered filing of FIRs against the TV channels, who the Congress President-elect, Rahul Gandhi, had given interviews. Joti served as the chief secretary to Modi when the latter was the Gujarat chief minister.

Surjewala said, “I am sorry to say but Modi has taken the help of the puppet Election Commission to save the BJP’s sinking ship in Gujarat.”

The Congress had alleged double-standards by the EC since it failed to act against the prime minister when he violated the model code of conduct by asking people to vote for his party even after the deadline to campaign was over. Modi had later invoked religion by asking voters if Congress was in favour of Hindu temple or Muslim mosque. This was a blatant attempt to polarise the votes along the lines of religion.

Surjewala added, “The PM’s violations are not seen by the EC. Its action amounts to police saying they have not seen a murder taking place in front of their eyes unless somebody comes up with an FIR.” He said even on Wednesday, the Congress sought an appointment with the Election Commission and was told the panel would meet them on Thursday morning.“It was only after we threatened to stage a dharna that we were given an appointment at 10.15 at night.”
