Narendra Modi government on Thursday nominated Malayalam actor and BJP’s star campaigner Suresh Gopi to Rajya Sabha.
Gopi was also asked by the saffron party to contest in the next month’s crucial assembly elections from Thiruvananthapuram constituency, but the actor had ‘politely’ turned down the offer.
According to Hindu Business Line, the actor was also considered for the post of chairman of the National Film Development Corporation.
The decision to nominate him for the Rajya Sabha was taken reportedly after Gopi’s recent meeting with the BJP national President Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.
His name, according to BJP sources, has been included in the list of prominent citizens being nominated to the Upper House by the President of India.
There are also reports that he may be made a cabinet minister in the forthcoming reshuffle.
The move assumes significance in the wake of Kerala assembly elections, where the BJP is desperately trying to make inroads.
Meanwhile, Gopi is likely to accompany Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s campaign tours of the state and also share the podium with him.
