In a significant boost to Congress in Gujarat ahead of the December assembly polls, Alpesh Thakor has decided to join the party.
Thakor, who’s a prominent face of the Thakor community leader in the poll-bound state, took the decision after meeting the Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday evening.
He said that Rahul will attend his rally on 23 October when he along with his supporters will join the Congress party.
The announcement came just hours after the Congress’s Gujarat president Bharatsinh Solanki urged Thakor and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani to join hands against the ruling BJP in the upcoming assembly elections.
“I am very happy that Mr Thakor had a meeting with our Vice President and agreed to join the Congress party. I hope that the Patidar agitation leader Hardik will also join us,” Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki said after the meeting with Rahul.
Along with Solanki, the party’s Gujarat in-charge, Ashok Gehlot, too attended the meeting of Thakor with Rahul.
The party had also urged the Patidar leader Hardik Patel to contest elections promising full support.
Hardik was quick to congratulate Thakor for his decision to join Congress. His tweet read, “Best Of Luck Alpesh Thakor.”

Sources said that the Dailt leader in Gujarat, Jignesh Mevani, too was likely to join Congress after his meeting with Rahul was reportedly confirmed.
