On Tuesday we reported how describing Bihar chief minister, Nitish Kumar, had cost the BJP stalwart Sushil Modi his Rajya Sabha seat.

A day after the BJP shocked everyone by fielding Gopal Narayan Singh over Modi, it has emerged that the new Rajya Sabha candidate for the saffron party has 28 criminal cases against him.

And the charges include attempt to murder.

The 72-year-old politician from Bihar has also lost eight consecutive assembly elections. Singh, 72, is the man the BJP has picked as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha.

Singh, according to a report by NDTV, said that he had the backing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS, the ideological mentor of the BJP.

“I am a Sangh worker and because of my services, the party and the Sangh decided to reward me with Rajya Sabha nomination,” he was quoted by the channel on Tuesday after filing his nomination in Patna.

BJP has for long attacked its political rivals including the ruling JD-U and RJD for promoting criminal elements in politics. The JD-U has been quick to embarrass the BJP on the latest revelation against Singh.

The party’s spokesperson, Sanjay Singh said, “Is this new chal (style of functioning), charitra (character) and chehra (face) of the party?”

The BJP’s RS candidate replied, “When the BJP is satisfied, why is the JD(U) suffering from heartburn?”

While some say that Modi was overlooked because of the party’s poor performance in last year’s assembly election, many believe that it was his pro-Nitish statement that cost him his RS berth.

The BJP had suffered a humiliating defeat in Bihar last year.
