BJP is facing widespread condemnation from activists and political rivals after one of its woman MLAs in Uttar Pradesh called BSP Chief Mayawati ‘worse than a eunuch.’ This was after a video of BJP MLA Sadhna Singh making astonishingly shameful statement about Mayawati during a public rally went viral.

Faced with unprecedented outrage, the National Commission for Women too said that it was sending a notice to Singh to explain why action should not be taken against her for her disgraceful statement. The NCW said in a tweet, “NCW has taken Suo Motu cognisance of the objectionable statement made by BJP MLA Ms. Sadhana Singh. The Commission will be sending a notice to Ms. Singh regarding the statement in question.”

Activist Kavita Krishnan wrote, “BJP and RSS Mann ki Baat on women and Dalits is again on display in this disgusting misogynist transphobic speech by a BJP MLA Sadhna Singh targeting Mayawati. Remember, BJP spokie @ShainaNC also said the same about #Mayawati – ‘I don’t know if she is man or woman’.”

Even Union Minister Ramdas Athawale  Sadhna Singh had said that even though his party was with the BJP, he didn’t agree with ‘disrespectful remarks against Mayawati.’ She is a strong lady of our Dalit community and a good administrator. I would’ve definitely taken action if it was someone from our party,” Athawale was quoted by news agency ANI.

BSP Ram Chandra Gautam, meanwhile, lodged a complaint in Baburi police station against Singh over her statement on BSP chief Mayawati. A defensive Singh soon issued a statement, apologising for her obnoxious comments for Mayawati. In a statement, Singh said that her intention was not to hurt Mayawati’s sentiments but only to remind about the BJP’s help in June 1995, when she was attacked by Samajwadi supporters.

Speaking in Chandauli in Uttar Pradesh, Singh had reminded Mayawati of a past incident when she was allegedly roughed up by the supporters of Samajwadi Party in 1995. Singh had told her supporters, “I don’t see Uttar Pradesh’s former Chief Minister as a woman or a man. She doesn’t understand what her dignity is…. Look at this woman. Everything was looted from her, and she has again sold all her dignity to get power.”

Singh’s astonishing attack did not end here. Amidst loud cheering from her fans, shehad said, “jis din mahila ka blouse phat jaye, petticoat phat jaye, saari phat jaye, wo mahila na satta ke liye aage aati hai, wo mahila kalankit hai Usko pure desh ki mahila kalankit maanti hai.Wo to kinnar se bhi jyada badtar hai, kyunki wo to na nar hai, na mahila hai. (The day a woman’s blouse is torn, petticoat is torn, sari is torn, that woman mustn’t come forward to achieve powers because she becomes tainted. The whole country deem her tainted. She is worse than a eunuch because neither is she a man nor woman.”
