Not so long ago, the BJP leader Pankaja Munde and Eknath Khadse had earned widespread condemnation for their perceived insensitivity towards the people living drought-hit areas of Maharashtra.
But, it appears that the party has not learnt anything from previous criticism.
In the latest episode of utter insensitivity by the leaders belonging to the saffron party, a team of BJP lawmakers on Sunday visited the drought-hit Latur, where the BJP workers welcome the MPs with fireworks.
The opposition parties and the BJP’s coalition partner Shiv Sena, have condemned the development describing the act as “shameless” insensitivity in a region where farmers are living in despair.
A report by NDTV, said that a dozen BJP parliamentarians visited the areas worst hit by severe drought in the Marathwada region where there have been at least 12 deaths this season.
BJP supporters at the local party office burst crackers and organised a tent and music to welcome the delegation.
“There were no garlands or Shehnais. If some enthusiastic supporters burst crackers, there is nothing wrong in it. It doesn’t mean that there will be crackers and shehnai in the entire tour,” said Raosaheb Danve, a union minister and BJP’s Maharashtra chief, was quoted by the channel.
The Shiv Sena, the alliance partner of the BJP in Maharashtra, has launched scathing attack.
Describing the act as “highly shameful,” Shiv Sena leader Balwant Jadhav, said, “I condemn this act. Is this the time for firecrackers? Are you are on a tour of drought hit areas or trying to campaign for your party?” .
Congress leader Venkatesh Bendre said: “They are the ruling party, they should take a decison on the suffering of people. But they are in some sort of celebration mode instead of helping farmers.”
Last month, thousands of litres of water were used to sprinkle the makeshift helipad of the state minister and a BJP leader, Eknath Khadse, just before his helicopter landed in Latur.
Ironically, the minister was there to review the drought situation.
Such is the crisis in Latur that the residents are having to rely on the water train being transported by central government.
Pankaja Munde was mocked and criticised on social media for taking a ‘drought selfie’ while touring Marathwada.
