Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced another round of embarrassment on Thursday after one BJP parliamentarian mocked veteran Congress leader Digvijay Singh by calling his wife an ‘item.’
BJP MP from Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, Manohar Untwal, was reportedly addressing a crowd in his constituency while also observing a fast called by Modi to protest against the washout of the parliament’s budget session.
In a viral video, Untwal is heard mocking Digvijay Singh, a former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, by calling his wife an ‘item.’ His comments were met with burst of laughter from the audience, all understandably BJP supporters. He then went on to attack the Congress party for criticising the Madhya Pradesh government, which recently accorded minister of state status to at least five Hindu babas.
These so-called godmen had threatened to launch a stir against the ruling BJP in the crucial election year to protest against Shivraj Singh Chouhan government for alleged irregularities in last year’s Narmada Sewa Yatra and the ‘record’ plantation of 6 crore saplings along the riverbanks.. The Choiuhan government’s decision to award them MoS status.
BJP and PM Modi have been under constant fire for their perceived disdain to women in general. Untwal’s deplorable comments have come amidst international outrage on the gangrape and murder of 8-year-old Asifa in Kashmir and serious rape allegations against a BJP MLA in Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, the rape victim’s father had died in police custody allegedly due to torture.
As Gujarat Chief Minister, Modi himself was notorious for attacking Congress leaders with misogynistic jibes. He had once called the late wife of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor ’50 crore ki girlfriend.’
