A BJP MLA in Madhya Pradesh has declared the Indian cricket captain, Virat Kohli, and his actor wife, Anushka Sharma, unpatriotic because of the couple’s decision to get married in Italy.
BJP MLA from Guna, Pannalal Shakya, said the couple did not deserve to be called as youth icons since their wedding was organised outside India.
“They earned money and fame in India but they didn’t find any appropriate place to marry on the land where Lord Ram got married. They are unpatriotic for getting married abroad,” Shakya was quoted by Hindustan Times.
The opposition Congress in the state condemned Shakya’s controversial comments and asked for an apology. Congress chief spokesperson KK Mishra said, “Being a responsible legislator, Shakya shouldn’t have given such a statement… Does the BJP leader want others to ask him to decide the venue of marriage? Who is he to comment over celebrities’ choice of place for marriage. What kind of message they want to give by insulting a celebrity who is the pride of our country?”
Virat and Anushka had tied knots in Italy on Monday last week. Soon after their wedding, they had posted identical tweets with the photo of their wedding.
Their tweets had read, “Today we have promised each other to be bound in love for ever. We are truly blessed to share the news with you. This beautiful day will be made more special with the love and support of our family of fans & well wishers. Thank you for being such an important part of our journey.”
