BJP faces rout in Uttar Pradesh in Lok Sabha polls, could win just 5 seats: India Today survey

A new survey by India Today has predicted a complete rout for the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah in Uttar Pradesh in this year’s Lok Sabha polls. India Today’s Mood Of The Nation poll has predicted just 18 seats for the BJP even if the Congress did not join the grand alliance comprising the SP, the BSP and the RLD.

The survey said that the SP-BSP-RLD alliance may win 58 seats in this year’s polls, while the Congress may increase its tally to four if it contested the parliamentary polls alone. In 2014, the Congress had won just two seats.

However, the prediction for the BJP was even worse if the Congress also joined the grand alliance. According to the India Today survey, the BJP’s tally will come down to just five seats with alliance, while the grand alliance will end up winning 75 seats. In 2014, the BJP had won 73 out of 80 seats in alliance with Apna Dal.

The news will come as a blow to Modi’s dream of becoming India’s prime minister for the second time as the seats from UP significantly contributed to the BJP’s overall tally of 282 seats. The saffron party had also won 25 out of 25 seats in Rajasthan, 26 out of 26 in Gujarat, 25 out of 27 in Madhya Pradesh and 10 out of 11 seats in Chhattisgarh.

The BJP recently lost its governments in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and barely managed to sail through in Gujarat. In Chhattisgarh, the Congress won a landslide by winning two-third majority.

On Wednesday, Priyanka Gandhi too made her foray in electoral politics after she was appointed the new AICC General Secretary for Eastern UP, which also includes Modi’s constituency in Varanasi. This development has further left the BJP bigwigs worries.
