The BJP recently announced that it had dropped Mriganka Singh’s name from Kairana when it announced its fresh list of candidates for Uttar Pradesh. While announcing the list, the saffron party had Pradeep Chaudhary from Kairana for this year’s parliamentary polls. Mriganka Singh, daughter of former BJP MP Hukum Singh, was dropped after suffering a defeat in the bypolls last year.
Kairana was won by Mriganka’s father in 2014, but the seat fell vacant after his death. The BJP had fielded Mriganka to contest the bypolls last year. However, she lost the polls by around 50,000 votes since the the opposition parties decided to field a unified candidate in RLD’s Tabassum Hassan.
Days after the BJP’s decision to drop Mriganka from Kairana, her supporters have put up a poster reiterating that only their leader could contest from there. The poster, shared by journalist Piyush Rai, read, “There should not be any doubt that only Mriganka will contest from Kairana. The entire Kairana will honour its daughter. No one from the BJP will be tolerated from Kairana.”
The poster also warned that, BJP supporters in the constituency will not vote for the BJP if the party did not field Mriganka from Kairana.

Uttar Pradesh goes to polls in seven phases with the counting scheduled for 23 May.
In 2017, Mriganka’s father, the then BJP MP from Kairana, had sensationally accused local Muslims of pushing Hindus to leave their village in a bid to polarise the voters ahead of the impending assembly polls in the area. Later, he had performed a U-turn by saying that there was no communal angle to Hindus leaving the area. But, by then, Muslims had been vilified by pro-government TV channels.
