I was not consulted on the appointment of Bihar’s governor: Nitish Kumar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday evening expressed his displeasure over the appointment of a senior BJP leader of Uttar Pradesh Ram Nath Kovind as the new Governor of Bihar.

He said that the decision was made without consulting him.

Speaking to reporters, Nitish Kumar said, “As per the precedent so far, the central government, the Home Minister talks to the state government and its chief minister on it (appointment of Governor)… This time there was no consultation. I have also got the information (about the appointment) through media.”

A lawyer by profession, Kovind had also been the BJP’s Scheduled Caste Morcha chief. 69-year-old Kovind, who has been a two-time Rajya Sabha member between 1994 and 2006, hails from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. His appointment comes barely few months ahead of the assembly elections in Bihar.

Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar was in New Delhi when the decision was made by President Pranab Mukherjee’s office on Saturday afternoon. The Bihar CM was holding discussions with migrants from Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.
