Mangalore police have arrested a Bajrang Dal activist, Bhuvith Shetty, for killing a Hindu youth, named Harish Poojary.
Shetty is the same person who, a day after well-known rationalist and writer Kulburgi was murdered in August, had tweeted that noted writer KS Bhgawan would be the “next” target.
Although Shetty deleted the tweets, his act landed him jail after the police registered a case suo-moto.
Bajrang Dal had blamed the ‘Muslim community’ for the murder of Poojary.
But IGP Amrit Paul, in a press conference in Mangalore on Thursday, said that Shetty (25) and Achyut (28) have been arrested for Poojary’s murder and the assault on his friend Samiullah.
Shetty was already facing a case of attempt to murder, for assaulting a cattle-transporter with sharp weapons.
Poojary and Samiullah were attacked with sharp weapons on November 12 in Mangaluru. Poojary died on the way to a hospital in Mangaluru while Samiullah is in hospital in a critical condition.
Police are on a lookout for other accused.
On the day, after the two youth were attacked, Bajrang Dal had called for a district-wide bandh.
Poojary’s last rites were performed in Navoor village amid a gathering of around 4,000 people, according to police estimates.
