Attempt to show Nehru as Muslim, Congress slams Modi government

Congress party has launched a fresh attack against the BJP-led government at the centre alleging that “mischievous” changes had been made in Wikipedia pages of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru through a government of India IP address.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told reports in Delhi on Wednesday, “Wikipedia pages of Jawaharlal Nehru and Motilal Nehru were altered. What is worse (is) it was done from a government Internet Protocol address and from National Informatics Centre. There was a sinister attempt to show that Jawaharlal Nehru was a Muslim.”

Demanding a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the matter, he said, “Will the Prime Minister answer how were the Wikipedia pages of former prime minister and Congress leaders altered through a government IP address?”

According to an NDTV report, one such edit was on Nehru’s grandfather Gangadhar, “Gangadhar was born as a Muslim by the name of Ghiasuddin Ghazi but changed his name to a Hindu Ganga Dhar to escape British clutches.”

The reports also said that Nehru’s alleged relationship with Edwina Mountbatten, the wife of the last British Viceroy Lord Mountbatten, too was added in Nehru’s pages through these secret editing.

Similar edits were made on the pages of Gangadhar’s son Motilal Nehru.

Jawaharlal Nehru, former prime minister Indira Gandhi’s father, was the first prime minister of Independent India.
