Assam MLA accused of raping his minor domestic help in moving car

Police in Assam said on Monday that a minor ‘rape victim’ had filed an FIR against an opposition MLA, Gopinath Das.

The 14-year old girl, who worked at the MLA’s house as a domestic help, filed the FIR on 29 August with the Mandira outpost, under Boko police station. She said that the MLA belonging to AIUDF had raped her inside his car in Guwahati.

Das, denies the charge calling it a conspiracy by his political rivals to ‘destroy my career’ adding that he had always treated her as his daughter.

“The girl ran away with all of belongings. She had been with us for three years. Never before did she have any complaint. This is nothing but a political conspiracy. God will not forgive them,” Das said.

Police Superintendent of Kamprup district Indrani Barua told PTI that a case had been registered against the MLA and law would take its own course.

Meanwhile, local people, women’s organisations, All Assam Students Union, All Rabha Students Union, All Assam Koch Rajbanshi Students Union members demonstrated in front of Boko Police Station against the MLA demanding his arrest and punishment.
