Little more than a week after he famously said that the Bihar election was all about chemistry and not arithmetic, the finance minister Arun Jaitley, on Monday confessed that the Grand Alliance’s unity was what had caused humiliating defeat for the BJP-led NDA.
Soon after the BJP’s parliamentary board meeting in Delhi, Jaitley said, ” Grand Alliance’s unity is the reason for our loss. We underestimated their combined strength. In terms of voteshare, we are still the single largest party with 24.6 percent of the electorates casting their votes in our favour. However, the combined voteshare of our opponents was miscalculated by us.”
Jaitley, last month, had rubbished the suggestion that the unity of the Grand Alliance will prove too much for the NDA to handle in Bihar elections.
He had told a channel, “This election is not about arithmetic. It is about chemistry. And the chemistry in this election is certainly on our side. It’s an aspirational election in the land of lost opportunities.
Earlier today, the BJP’s parliamentary board meeting was attended by several high profile party leaders including Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting was to deliberate the factors contributing to the party’s crushing defeat at the hands of Nitish Kumar led alliance.
BJP has still not recovered from its second most humiliating defeat since coming to power at the centre 18 months ago.
