A tweet by the defence ministry spokesperson read, “Today afternoon a MiG-21 aircraft on a routine mission crashed after getting airborne from Nal near Bikaner. Pilot of the aircraft ejected safely. Initial inputs suggest a bird hit. CoI will be investigating the cause of the accident.”

This comes just days after Pakistani military had claimed to down MiG 21, which was being flown by Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. The Indian Air Force Officer was later captured by the Pakistani army.

A report by news agency PTI said that the jet that crashed on Friday was on a routine IAF sortie. A Court of Inquiry has been ordered, which will investigate the cause of the accident.

On the day Wing Commander’s MiG 21 was shot down by Pakistan, a Mi 17 helicopter had crashed near Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, killing six Air Force officials.
