The Congress on Tuesday clarified that its Delhi President Ajay Maken had not resigned and had only left for medical checkup.
News agency ANI quoted PC Chacko as saying, “Ajay Maken has some health problem and has gone for medical checkup. He’ll be back next week and probably he’s little worried that he can’t devote full time or travel the way he wants. On his return,we’ll discuss working arrangements but the fact is he has not resigned.”
This was moments after several news agencies reported that Maken had left India for medical checkup while resigning from his post as the President of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee.
Maken had offered to resigned last year when the part performed poorly in the city’s civil polls. But his resignation was not accepted.
Maken had taken over the control of the Delhi unit of the Congress from Arvinder Singh Lovely three years ago, but led his party to two back to back defeats in the assembly elections in 2013 and 2015 respectively. In 2015, the Congress failed to win a single seat.
He’s reportedly unhappy with the party over the reported talks of seat sharing arrangements with the AAP in Delhi. While the central leadership is trying to arrive stitch an alliance with non-BJP parties across the country, Maken has vehemently opposed the move to have any understanding with the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi.
The AAP has almost finalised its candidates for five of the seven seats in Delhi with some commentators suspecting that the two may be offered to the Congress.
