In his subsequent tweets, Ilmi said that he will return to ‘writing, political analysis and a healthcare project I am working on.’

Back to writing, political analysis and a healthcare project I am working on.

Imli told The Quint that the public discourse had become too ‘divisive’ in India. He said, “The discourse is too divisive. I feel it’s better to exit rather than drag Ali-Bajrang-Bali into elections. For many months, I’ve either refused or recused myself from media debates, since most of them are about the Hindu-Muslim divide as the sole narrative. We need to talk about the polity as equal Indian citizens.”

Ilmi’s decision came on the day when Upendra Kushwaha, a union minister in the Centre’s Narendra Modi government, announced his party’s split from the NDA.

Ilmi’s sister Shazia Ilmi continues to remain in the BJP, which she had joined afgter quitting Aam Aadmi Party.
