Social activist Swami Agnivesh was assaulted on Friday outside the BJP headquarters in Delhi after he arrived there to pay his last respect to former prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Vajpayee had died at Delhi’s AIIMS on Thursday. His body is kept at the BJP headquarters for people to pay their last respect.
A video going viral on social media shows Agnivesh being chased a dozen odd people with some even assaulting the saffron-robed spiritual guru. Others are heard shouting wapas jao, wapas jao (Go back, go back).”

This is not the first time the popular activist has been assaulted by the supporters of the right-wing ideology. In July, he was assaulted by the members of the BJP’s youth wing in Jharkhand.
“As soon as I came out of the venue, BJYM and ABVP activists attacked me without any provocation. They alleged that I was speaking against Hindus,” The 78-year-old activist had told PTI.
The latest attack on Agnivesh has evoked angry reactions from social media users, who said that it had become a fashion to attack anyone who did not agree with the government’s policies. One user wrote, “First it was Muslims. Now Hindus who don’t agree with them. Is New India safer than Pakistan?”
Journalist Zafar Abbas wrote, “This is new India ,now a group or mob will decide who should pay last tribute to #AtalBihariVajpayee & who not. Disgusting to see how a group of BJP supporters heckled and manhandled #SwamiAgnivesh outside BJP office amid nasty slogans. The mob culture is taking over. Pathetic !”
User Shubham tweeted, “This is what he has left behind. We understand atal ji was a good human being but the ideology he helped feeding has made India to come to this. #swamiagnivesh was on his was to pay condolences to ABV, yet he was assaulted by BJP goons.”
