News channel ABP has come under fire on social media after it tweeted about the arrival of a crematorium van inside the premises of AIIMS, where former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is under treatment.
Twitter users were incensed that the channel’s tweet appeared to link the arrival of the crematorium van to that of Vajpayee’s health implying that there was a bad news related to the former prime minister.
In its tweet, ABP News Hindi posted a photo of an crematorium van and wrote, “JUST IN: In the midst of #AtalBihariVaajpayee’s critical condition, a van belonging to Nigam Bodh crematorium arrives inside the premises of AIIMS.”
The tweet left Twitter users, particularly supporters of the of the BJP, who began to troll the news channel. One user asked, “You think he’ll be taken directly from AIIMS to cremation ground in a MCD vehicle? He is a former PM, a Bharat Ratna. Don’t even know the protocol? BIoody journalism! (sic)”
Another user wrote, “I hate the person behind this handle. Hospital hai wo. Ese gaadio ka ana jaana waha aam baat hai. Have sm sense. Please be a responsible channel and dont spread false news and create more panic. Pls (sic)” Another Twitter user tweeted, “ABP News thinks when Vajpayee ji departs, he will be directly taken from AIIMS to crematorium in municipality tempo.”
“Shame on such journalism,” wrote on user. And similar sentiments were expressed by a host of other users.
Vajpayee has been kept on life support after the AIIMS doctors said on Wednesday that his condition had deteriorated considerably. A statement from AIIMS had said, “Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted for the last nine weeks at AIIMS. Unfortunately, his condition has worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on life support system.” A second medical bulletin on Thursday too had said that there was no change in his condition.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited him twice since last evening. Leaders cutting across the party line have been praying for his recovery.
