AAP MLA Alka Lamba on Wednesday fiercely defended Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s foray in politics. The Chandni Chowk MLA took to Twitter to defend Priyanka’s entry in politics moments after the Congress President Rahul Gandhi announced his sister’s name as the new AICC General Secretary for Eastern Uttar Pradesh for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Despite belonging to the rival party of the Congress, Lamba’s defence was more fierce than most Congress leaders, who reacted on Priyanka Gandhi’s appointment. In a series of tweets, Lamba wrote, “I think this will help the Congress in UP (in Lok Sabha polls). If Varun Gandhi (BJP MP and Priyanka’s first cousin) too joins, then it will be a game changer.”

Her subsequent tweet read, “Going by the reactions of BJP spokespersons, it’s clear that Rahul Gandhi has hit the 56 inch chest (of Prime Minister Narendra Modi) by appointing Priyanka Gandhi in a new role. Modi Vs Priyanka Varanasi?” This was in reference to speculations that Priyanka may be fielded against Modi in Varanasi this year.

She added in another tweet, “The politics of young India desperately needs change. In such circumstances, if new faces are brought in, then they must be welcomed. And if that new face is of a woman, then keeping moral values in mind, even bigger welcome is required. Women coming to politics will strengthen the half of India’s population.”

Countering BJP’s allegations of promoting dynasty politics, Lamba wrote that the Nehru-Gandhi family was better than the Sangh family. She wrote, “At least, this family is better than the Sangh Parivar. The first family (RSS) bowed down before the British rulers. The second family (Nehru-Gandhi) remained steadfast till India became independent. The first family (RSS) killed others, the second (Nehru-Gandhi) sacrificed their own lives. The first family has no contribution to India, the country is indebted to the contribution made by the other family.”

The Congress president had earlier announced that Priyanka Gandhi had been made the All India Congress Committee General Secretary for East UP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The official communication had read, “Honourable Congress President has also appointed Smt Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect on first week of February 2019.”

Gandhi is currently visiting his constituency on a two-day tour. Ahead of his visit, he had taken to his Facebook page to write, “I am coming to Amethi. Will be with my people and discuss issues with them. Will keep sharing the details of my story of happiness with you by way of pictures.”

Jyotiraditya Sicndia too was made the AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh West. These appointments assume significance in light of this year’s Lok Sabha polls. The Congress is not a part of the non-BJP grand alliance comprising the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal.
