In a strongly worded statement of support, a section of the faculty from the IIT-Bombay on Friday threw their weight behind the protesting students of Jawaharlal University.
The IIT-Bombay faculty condemned the “overreach” by the government in various educational institutions alleging its attempts to stifle dissent and suppress differences.
“The State cannot dictate on the many meanings of what it is to be ‘Indian’ or mandate the meaning of ‘nationalism’,” News agency PTI quoted the statement signed by 42 faculty members.
Expressing deep concerns over the recent events, the statement further added, “that have undermined the autonomy of institutions of higher education(in the country). We believe that these institutions are spaces of critical thinking and expression.”
“We condemn the overreach of the State in the recent incidents in a number of institutions and the attempts of the right-wing to stifle dissent and suppress differences,” it added.
This statement of support came after nearly 500 academicians, economists and scholars of international repute have extended their support to the arrested leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Kanhaiya Kumar.
