Three persons were killed in an explosion in a car at Maur Mandi near here this evening.
“Three persons were killed in a blast in a Maruti car,” Bathinda Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said. Those killed include two adults and a boy. Their identity has not been ascertained yet. It is not known what led to the incident, he said.
12 people have also been seriously injured in the explosion.
The incident took place near the venue of the road show of Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi, who is contesting the upcoming polls in the state from the Maur assembly seat.
The explosive, as reported by SDM Maur Latif Ahmed, was planted in a car at the spot.
Quoting police, Punjab’s Tribune newspaper reported that Congress office in-charge at Maur Mandi, Harpal Singh Pali, was among the dead.
Local residents claimed they heard three blasts followed by gunshots immediately after Jassi had winded up the rally.
Jassi’s driver Vicky called it a “planned attack.” Shrapnels and bolts were found inside a pressure cooker used in the blast. Police officials did not rule out the use of RDX.
“The moment I heard the blast, I pressed the accelerator of the Toyota Fortuner. By then I heard two more blasts,” Vicky claimed.
Reacting to the news, Congress vice president, Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Extremely concerned to learn of the blast during a Congress Rally in Maur, Punjab. I share the grief of the families who lost loved ones in this blast & pray for the quick recovery of the injured.”
