3 dead after a building collapse in Delhi’s Vishnu Nagar


At least three people are reported to have died after a multi-storey  building in West Delhi collapsed on Saturday night. The incident, which took place in the Vishnu Garden area has left many injured while more people are feared to be trapped under the debris.

DCP (West Delhi) Pushpendra Kumar said, “The building in Vishnu Garden (in Khayala) collapsed and we are conducting a rescue operation. Many are feared to be trapped in the debris of the multi storey building.”

According to fire department officials, the collapse was reported at around 8:40 pm and the injured were quickly taken to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital.

“The caller informed that a five-storey building collapsed and fell on to an adjacent residential building. Eight fire tenders were pressed into service and rescue work was initiated along with teams of civil defence,” an official was reported as saying.

Reports suggest that the building collapsed following a digging at a nearby construction site. Among the dead is also believed to be a woman who lived in the building adjacent to the one that collapsed. The authorities fear the death toll could go higher.

Another official said that it was an unauthorised colony, which was later regularised.
