2 newly elected Trinamool MPs, Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty, set to add glamour quotient in parliament

Two newly elected MPs from the Trinamool Congress, Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chraborty, arrived in the parliament on Monday after winning their debut electoral battles in the just-concluded Lok Sabha polls.

Nusrat Jahan

Both Jahan and Chakraborty are known Tallywood actresses and were declared winners on 23 May even when the BJP managed to make a significant dent in what’s been known as the Trinamool citadel of Bengal. There was considerable spotlight on both of them from the waiting media as they flaunted their newly acquired identity cards as MPS while standing inside the parliament complex.

Mimi Chakraborty defeated Anupam Hazra from the prestigious Jadavpur constituency by a whopping three lakh votes. She polled 688472 votes against her nearest BJP rival, who could get only 393233 votes.

As for Jahan, she was the Trinamool candidate from Basirhat, where she defeated her BJP rival Sayantan Basu by a margin of 3.5 lakh votes. Jahan received 782078 votes, while Basu had to contend with 431709 votes.

The Trinamool had fielded as many as 17 women candidates out of total 42 seats in the state. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who’s also the chief of her party, had highlighted this aspect while releasing the names of her candidates in March this year. She had said, “I want to thank Ma Mati Manush (Mother, Soil and People). Greetings to all. Today we announced our list of 2019 Lok Sabha candidates for Bengal and some other States. I am all the more happy and proud because 41% of our candidates (17/42 seats) are women. Trinamool’s list speaks for itself.”

The electoral victory of Jahan and Chakraborty has become a topic of intense social media conversations. User Parvati Goenka wrote, “Two Bongo beauties will be seen in parliament. Voted for Mimi Chakraborty & my vote were never wasted in my life. Both this MP’s gonna work under the leadership of CM Mamata Banerjee, rest of the people given others responsibility to strengthen the party for 21.”

User AK Singh Gaur wrote on Facebook, “Two beautiful ladies will create a charm in the parliament.” User Moon Chowdhury commented, “Beautiful but yet to prove brain.” Saravjit Kahlon cheekily wrote, “High attendance in Lok Sabha henceforth.”

Speaking to News18 Bangla before the elections, both Jahan and Chakraborty had confessed that they will face plenty of challenges within their party because of their lack of experience in politics. They had, however, said that both were ready to take a plunge in the electoral politics. Their remarkable success in this year’s parliamentary polls have only proven them right.
