According to some reports, the incident was a result of a massive turnout of devotees in the early hoursleading to pandemonium that soon developed into a stampede in the temple premises.
The Shiva temple attracts thousands of visitors every day during the holy month of Saavan.
Muzaffarpur has been in news recently after it emerged that 34 girls living at a shelter home were routinely raped, tortured and even killed. The main accused Brajesh Thakur, whose NGO managed the shelter home, has been arrested.
Bihar Police on Saturday had recovered a list of 40 mobile phone numbers on a sheet that Thakur was using to seek help from outside the jail.
