100 UP girls stop going to school for fear of harassment

As many as 100 girls have stopped going to school in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh fearing harassment from boys.

These girls from six villages have complained of regular harassment by a group of youths prompting them to take this drastic step.

According to reports, the parents of five girls have now lodged a police complaint on charges of on charges of passing lewd remarks, obscene acts, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult with an intent to provoke breach of the peace.

Police, however, has not been able to make any arrests so far.  Bareilly Additional SP (rural), Brijesh Kumar Srivastava said that the girls from three villages took boat ride to cross the river to travel to their school. The accused youths, who live in Tanda village situated on the other side of the river, regularly took bath in the river and waited for them.

Local village pradhan Tej Pal Singh Gangwar said that the parents of some of the girls informed the local police station but no action was taken.
