Not many knows that Abhishek Bachchan was engaged with Karisma Kapoor before he got married to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Karisma and Abhishek dated each other for nearly two years before their relationship ended some time in 2002.
While Karisma went on to marry a divorcee Sanjay Kapur, who she divorced in 2016, Abhishek too moved on in life before falling in love with Aishwarya. She’s currently living alone with her two children, Samiera and Kiaan, while dating one Sandeep Toshniwal.
Karisma was at the peak of her career in late 90s and early part of the new millennium, when she acted in a series of hits films such as Dil To Pagal Hai, Zubeidaa, Fiza, Raja Hindustani and a series of hits opposite Govinda in David Dhawan’s films.
In January 2001, Karisma was visiting Kolkata, then known as Calcutta, where the organiser of her event invited a selected group of journalists to spend some time with her in an informal environment. The trip to Kolkata had taken place just before the release of Shyam Benegal’s Zubeidaa.
It all began with both Benegal and Karisma expressing their love for Calcutta and its ‘beautiful’ people. No sooner had she answered a few questions on why she likes Calcutta’s mishti doi ( sweet curd), came a question from a journalist of a Bengali daily on her reported relationship with Abhishek.
A visibly embarrassed Karisma decided to call it quits and insisted that the organisers wind up her question and answer session with the media immediately. She walked out of room in a huff. The most embarrassing moment came when the Bollywood actress slipped on the stairs narrowly escaping some serious injuries. Her shoes came down rolling through the stairs, compounding her and organiser’s woes immensely.
The incident took place soon after Karisma’s younger sister Kareena had made a Bollywood debut opposite Abhishek in Refugee.
Karisma’s father Randhir Kapoor was recently asked on whether she planned to marry her reported boyfriend Sandeep. To which Kapoor came up with a tactful reply, think Lolo (Karisma’s nickname) is very well settled and happy. I have never discussed the issue of marriage with her but if she does plan to, she will always have my blessings. But I don’t think she wants to get married. She is a happy mother and if she wants, she can get married any time but there is no step in that direction right now. She is happy the way she is. Lolo is an excellent mother who dotes on her children and probably doesn’t feel the need to get married.”
Karisma was recently in London as part of the grand reunion even of the Kapoor clan. While in London, the actress also celebrated her 44th birthday.
