Undeterred by threats of quitting the party from its sitting MP Udit Raj, the BJP on Tuesday announced the name singer Hans Raj Hans from Delhi’s North West parliamentary seat.
Hans Raj Hans later filed his nomination from North Delhi. Terming Prime Minister Narendra Modi his hero, the singer said that he had always been a fighter and was here to win. “I am a son of a farm labourer, it is in my genes to work hard. I consider PM Modi as my hero,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying.
Raj had threatened to quit the party if the BJP did not field from the seat that he won in 2014 by over one lakh votes. Five years ago, Raj had defeated the Aam Aadmi Party’s Rakhi Birla.
Raj said that he trusted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah and this was his mistake. The Dalit leader alleged that by denying him a ticket, the BJP had made it clear that it did not want a Dalit leader in the party.
He also revealed that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had called him on Monday adding that he was also in touch with the Congress. He’s likely to file his nominations as an independent candidate.
With Hans Raj Hans being field as the BJP’s candidate from North West Delhi, the BJP has announced candidates for all seven seats in the national capital. Earlier the party had announced the names of former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir and sitting Meenakshi Lekhi from East Delhi and New Delhi constituencies respectively. The saffron party has also fielded Union Minister Harshwardhan from Chandni Chowk, Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi, Pravesh Verma from West Delhi and Ramesh Bidhuri from South Delhi.
