Wrestler Bajrang Punia earned plenty of plaudits over the weekend after he clinched a gold medal in the men’s freestyle 65 kg category at Asian Games.
Bajrang clinched the gold medal defeating Daichi Takatani of Japan 11-8 in the final to give India its first gold of the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta.
The star athlete began to trend nationally on Twitter after his remarkable feat. The latest Gold medal was Bajrang’s second successive gold medal at the Asian Games after his triumph in Incheon 2014 in the 61 kg category.
Tributes began to pour in on social media as fans hailed his achievement. One tribute that largely went unnoticed was that of actor Shahid Kapoor, who is waiting for the release of Batti Gul Meter Chalu. The film has been in the news for its catchy song When you getting gold, why go for tamba (bronze). The song has become an instant hit among Bollywood fans both because of its quirky tune and equally cute dance steps by Shahid and co-actor Shraddha Kapoor.
Taking a cue from the song When you getting gold… Shahid posted the Gold medal winning video of Bajrang as his Insta story. Shahid’s caption read, “When you getting gold, why go for tamba, India.”
With one Gold, two Silver and one Bronze, India have won four medals in the ongoing Asian Games, occupying seventh spot in the medals’ table. Shahid would hope that his track may work as an anthem to motivate the Indian athletes.
The Indian contingent are really hoping to add more medals in sports such as wrestling, shooting and even track and field event.
