Satyajit Ray’s wife Bijoya passes away

Iconic filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s widow Bijoya Ray passed away in Kolkata on Tuesday, following a severe pneumonia attack in Belle Vue Clinic. Leaving behind filmmaker son Sandip, daughter-in-law Lalita and grandson Souradeep, Bijoya died at the age of 98.

Belle Vue Clinic chief executive officer P. Tondon told a news agency, “She was admitted to our nursing home on Saturday noon following an acute pneumonia attack. She was under the treatment of physician Swapan Pal. She passed away at 6.06 p.m..”

According to nursing home officials, Bijoya had been put on ventilator support as her condition was critical.

Born as Bijoya Das, she married Satyajit Ray in 1949 and remained an inspiration to her beloved husband all his life.
