BJP’s controversial spokesperson Sambit Patra on Wednesday likened the appointment of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry in active politics to the Congress’ culture of ‘dynasty’ politics. He said that her appointment as the AICC General Secretary for the Eastern Uttar Pradesh was also an admission on the part of the Congress that Rahul Gandhi had failed in reviving his party.
“Expected, to promote dynasty is what Congress is all about. They consider family as the party while BJP considers party as the family. Congress has accepted that Rahul Gandhi Ji has failed,” Patra was quoted by news agency ANI.
Patra’s comments evoked angry reactions from social media users with many of them subjecting him to incessant trolling for the glaring hypocrisy coupled with factual inaccuracies. User Kumar Sunil wrote, “When (Home Minister) Rajnath Singh’s son get election ticket then Sambit Patra could not see dynasty but in PG case he talking about dynasty. Really he is a rubbish spokesperson of BJP.” Singh’s son, Pankaj Singh, had successfully contested from Noida in 2017 assembly elections.
Like Pankaj Singh, several other children and spouses of BJP leaders have joined politics using the power and names of their relatives.
Other users sought to correct Patra for his factual inaccuracies while reminding that the Congress president had just led his party to oust BJP governments in three states, namely Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. User Anurag Chaturvedi wrote, “Bjp lost 3 states election by congress president sri Rahul Gandhi but Patra said he failed..” User Jagrity Sablok asked, “Who takes this man seriously after seeing the level of his arguments in debate panels??”
However, not all BJP leaders agreed with Patra. Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Priyanka Ji has become General Secy, my good-luck to her. Since party is a family concern, these kinds of postings are nothing unusual, except to say with a caveat, why she has been given limited role of only Eastern UP? Perhaps her persona merited a wider role for her.”
The Congress president had earlier announced that Priyanka Gandhi had been made the All India Congress Committee General Secretary for East UP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
The official communication had read, “Honourable Congress President has also appointed Smt Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect on first week of February 2019.”
Gandhi is currently visiting his constituency on a two-day tour. Ahead of his visit, he had taken to his Facebook page to write, “I am coming to Amethi. Will be with my people and discuss issues with them. Will keep sharing the details of my story of happiness with you by way of pictures.”
Jyotiraditya Sicndia too was made the AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh West. These appointments assume significance in light of this year’s Lok Sabha polls. The Congress is not a part of the non-BJP grand alliance comprising the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal.
