BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra courted fresh controversy by taking a potshot at Congress President Sonia Gandhi with the ‘Italian’ jibe on Monday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah were called ‘infiltrators.’

Replying to the attack by the Congress’ parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Patra wrote, “Gujaratis are infiltrators in India?? And what about Italian….??”

Patra’s attack against Sonia Gandhi evoked mixed reactions on the microblogging site, where some of his supporters sounded disappointed with the BJP for not being able to counter the attack from the Congress, which has only 52 MPs in comparison to over 300 MPs belonging to the saffron party.

Patra’s attack came after Chowdhury was quoted by news agency ANI as saying, “Hindustan sab ke liye hai, ye Hindustan kisi ki jageer hai kya? Sabka samaan adhikaar hai. Amit Shah ji, Narendra Modi ji aap khud ghuspetiye hain. Ghar aapka Gujarat agaye Dilli, aap khud migrant hain (India is for everyone. Is India the personal property of anyone? Everyone has equal rights here. Amit Shah ji, Narendra Modi ji, you are the real infiltrators. Your home is in Gujarat, but you are migrants to Delhi.)”

Chowdhury had said that by continuously raising the issue of the NRC, the BJP was trying to instill fear among the original citizens of India.
