RLSP leader, former ally of BJP, likens MP Manoj Tiwari to terrorist?

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari has come under sharp attack from opposition parties for choosing to pose in an army jacket. Tiwari, also the president of the BJP’s Delhi unit, had taken part in a bike rally wearing an army jacket.

Taking a potshot at Tiwari, RLSP’s National General Secretary, Madhaw Anand, likened the actor-turned-politician to a terrorist. He wrote, “Whether it’s Pathankot or Kupwara, every terror attack had terrorists disguising themselves in army uniform. It’s a matter of shame that even politicians are wearing the army uniform. One should value the dignity of this uniform. To boost his political career by invoking army uniform and nationalism is utterly shameful.”

Anand is not the only politician to have slammed Tiwari for wearing an army jacket. Calling Tiwari a low life, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien had tweeted, “Shameless. Shameless. Shameless. Manoj Tewari BJP MP and Delhi President wearing the Armed Forces uniform and seeking votes. BJP-Modi-Shah insulting and politicising our jawans. And then giving lectures on patriotism. Low life.”

Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee had tweeted, “Utterly disgusting & disgraceful! A soldier sacrifices his life to uphold the dignity & honour of this uniform. And BJP MP @ManojTiwariMP is turning it into Tamasha resorting to cheap stunts & cheaper politics.”

Reacting to the criticism by opposition parties, Tiwari on Monday told news agency ANI that he often wore army uniform. He said, “From time to time, I wear armed forces caps, t-shirts. I feel proud to wear it, to respect the armed forces is patriotism. The people of the country are proud to wear it.”

RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha had resigned as a union minister from the Narendra Modi government and pulled out of the NDA in December last year.
