Renowned Qawwali singer Amjad Sabri shot dead in Karachi


Renowned Qawalli Amjad Sabri was shot dead on Wednesday by unknown gunmen in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi.

Various local media reports said that Amjad Sabri was brought dead at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The attack took place in Liaquatabad area of Karachi.


The identity of the other injured was yet to be ascertained, reports suggest that famous son of Ghulam Farid Sabri was the target.

Member of the famous Sabri brothers family, Amjad was born on 23 December, 1976 in Karachi. He was the new member of the Sabri group. He has been known and nourished with all the knowledge of music.

Amjad was the nephew of qawwali icon Maqbool Sabri, who along with his brother, the late Ghulam Farid Sabri, formed a formidable qawwali group Sabri Brothers in the mid-50s and became a global phenomenan.

Sabri Brothers are re-known Qawwali group party of Pakistan.

An eye witness told a local media, “Then they turned and fired four shots on the other side of the car.”

Police Surgeon Dr Rohina Hasan confirmed Sabri’s death. She said that he was shot thrice, twice in the head and once on the ear.

According to Pakistan Today, Amjad Sabri was one of the country’s finest qawwals, known for his soul-stirring renditions of mystic poetry.

His music was famous for spirituality, mysticism and ecstasy. He was well-versed with the structure and aesthetics of qawwali as well as knew how to make it adaptive to the contemporary music keeping its essence alive.
