Anupam Kher-starrer The Accidental Prime Minister has failed to impress Bollywood fans as the film has already begun to struggle at the box office. Three days since its release, the film has barely collected Rs 12 crore. In the same period, Uri The Surgical Strike has earned more than Rs 35 crore.
Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh gave the breakdown of Uri The Surgical Strike‘s box office performance. He wrote, “#UriTheSurgicalStrike emerges the FIRST HIT of 2019… Indeed, 2019 has started with high josh… Sets the BO on ??? on Day 3… Packs a solid total in its opening weekend… Fri 8.20 cr, Sat 12.43 cr, Sun 15.10 cr. One the reasons why Uri The Surgical Strike has performed exceptionally well is because it’s not a propaganda film. Noted filmmaker Anurag Kashyap wrote, “Uri” is not a propaganda film. Any war film about the heroism of its soldiers will be patriotic by default. By that standards “Border” , LOC, Haqeeqat wore patriotism on its sleeve. War movies are either anti-war like “come and See” or patriotic.”
He added, “I quite liked “Uri” for the way it was executed . I went in thinking it will be a propaganda film & it just sticks true to what happened with similar creative liberties most film makers take in telling a story.”
In contrast, The Accidental Prime Minister has earned critics’ wrath for its jingoism and desperation to vilify the Congress party in the crucial election year. The fact that the film’s trailer was first tweeted from the BJP’s official handle with several ministers throwing their weight behind the film also dampened the spirit of the potential movie goers. The final nail in the coffin was Kher’s spectacularly poor acting in imitating former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Kher, who had originally claimed that his performance in the film was worthy of an Oscar award, has denied The Accidental Prime Minister being a propaganda film, aimed at helping the BJP politically. He told news agency IANS, “We have made this film with a lot of sincerity and we don’t have any political agenda behind the release of the film.”
Going by the lukewarm response to his film even by hardcore bhakts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi shows that even they have not bought into Kher’s clarification.
