Popular Malayalam TV actress, mother and sister among 8 arrested for printing fake currency, cops probe fake ‘godman’ angle

Police in Kerala have arrested eight people including popular Malayalam TV actress Surya Sasikumar along with her mother and sister for printing fake currency at their residence reportedly in a bid to make up for the losses they had incurred in their business recently.

Circle Inspector of Police VS Sunilkumar, who led the team that arrested Surya and her family members said that the cops had recovered an entire printing facility at their house. Surya, her sister, Shruthi and their mother Remadevi, were arrested from Kochi on Wednesday before police nabbed two more individuals on Thursday taking the total number of arrests to eight.

Sunilkumar told IANS that the family had confessed to their crime adding that they’ve been printing counterfeit currency at their residence since September last year. The famil was forced to go down this route after they suffered huge losses in their businesses. All eight individuals have now been sent to judicial custody.

Cops are also probing the angle of a fake ‘godman,’ who may have played a key role in persuading Surya and her family into fake currency printing nexus.

“We believe it was their chance meeting with a ‘fake godman’ who led the actress and her family into the racket of counterfeit currency business,” Sunilkumar was quoted by IANS..

He added, “We were able to recover about Rs 2 lakh counterfeit notes… We have seized papers, printers and other materials used to print counterfeit notes. It was stocked at their residence to print notes worth Rs 5 million.”

The police have also seized counterfeit currency notes with face value of Rs 57 lakh from their residence at Kollam, said Idukki Police chief K B Venugopal.

“She had allowed the upper portion of her premises at Kollam to be used for the illegal activity. She had also financed the cost for printing by spending about 4.36 lakh,” Venugopal was quoted PTI.

He said that the cops traced a team of professionals in Idukki, who were engaged in printing counterfeit currency, who led them to the actress and her family members. He said the entire group was functioning as a “well-knit team”.

“The actress and her family have admitted that they were into this business of printing counterfeit notes since September last year,” said the police officer.

Surya has been a popular TV actress featuring in several serials aired by a number of Kerala-based TV channels.
