Rahul Anwar, Rahmat and Wasim had later surrendered before the police hours after they committed the horrific crime. Mala was a known designer in Delhi and ran a boutique in Green Park area.

Her sister, Aarti Sharma, also a designer, told news agency PTI that the man, who brutally murdered her for money was once freed from the jail by her sister. She said that it was Meenu, as Mala was known in her family, who helped get Rahul out of jail when he was arrested for molestation.

In 2017, Rahul was arrested for allegedly molesting a minor girl in Rangpuri Pahari area. “She would always say that Anwar is like my ‘bachcha’,” Aarti was quoted as saying.

Recalling her last conversation with her sister before her tragic murder, Aarti said that she was on the phone with her sister on the fateful night until 9.50 pm, when Mala said that she will call back after Bigg Boss show was over. She never called back and learnt about her murder when cops contacted her.

Mala’s another sister, Alisha wrote a moving post on her social media page. She wrote, “I hope you are sitting in Nana’s godi. And nani stroking your hair like you stoked mine…I know Bahadur is still by your side. I know I will meet you again and you will hug me again one day. I don’t know how I will live now. God can be extremely cruel and took you both in the most horrible way .. one day I will know why he was cruel to the kindest people who believed in him.”

53-year-old Lakhani was murdered at her residence in Delhi’s posh Vasant Kunj neighbourhood on Wednesday night. Rahul and his two associates had also killed Bahadur Singh as he rushed to protect Mala. Bahadur worked as Mala’s domestic help.
