‘I would like to apologise,’ writes Karan Johar for ridiculing Assamese headgear on India’s Got Talent


Filmmaker Karan Johar has publicly apologised for ridiculing the Assamese headgear while judging the TV reality show India’s Got Talent. Taking to Twitter, Karan wrote that he wanted to apologise for hurting the sentiments of people of Assam. He also announced that he had deleted the video, posted by him on his Insta story.

He wrote, “You are absolutely right and I would like to apologise if I have hurt any sentiments…..it was purely unintentional and came from a place of no knowledge which is absolutely no excuse….am extremely sensitive to the different cultures of our land and I am very sorry….”

Karan is currently judging the new edition of India’s Got Talent on Colors TV along with Kirron Kher and Malaika Arora. He had posted a video as part of his Insta story on Instagram showing his informal conversation with his fellow judges. In the video, he was seen mocking Assamese headgear, known as Jaapi, which a contestant from the north-east had gifted him. When asked by Kher as to why he was not wearing the headgear, Karan was hear saying mockingly, “Because you have guts, I don’t.” This had enraged many people from the north-east including a journalist, who took to Twitter to express his disgust on the filmmaker’s insensitivity.
